WARNING Never attempt to view optical connectors that might be emitting laser energy. Do not power up the laser product without connecting the laser to the optical fiber and putting the cover in position, as laser outputs will emit infrared laser light at this point.
WARNING If you must view the beam, use appropriate filtered or attenuated viewing aids.
Avoid getting dust or other contaminants into the fiber bore of the SFP transceiver module, as this will cause the optics to not operate properly.

  1. For future reattachment of fiber-optic cables, note which connector plug is send (TX) and which is receive (RX).
Always terminate the optical ports of the SFP transceiver with an optical connector or with a dust plug.
  2. Remove the old SFP module.
WARNING Be careful when removing the SFP module. Some SFP transceiver module temperatures may exceed 70 °C (158 °F) and be too hot to touch with bare hands.
    1. Disconnect the cables from the SFP module.
WARNING Visible and invisible laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam or view the beam directly with optical instruments. Do not point the beam at other people. Failure to observe this warning could result in an eye injury or blindness.
    2. Pull the bail clasp latch out and down to eject the SFP module from the socket connector.
    3. Grasp the SFP module between your thumb and index finger, and carefully remove it from the socket.
  3. Remove the new SFP transceiver module from its protective packaging.
Do not yet remove the optical bore dust plug from the SFP module.
  4. Check the slot orientation and carefully slide the SFP module into the slot, aligning it with the internal installation guides.
  5. Make sure that the SFP module is firmly seated against the internal mating connector.
    1. Grasp the SFP module by the sides and try to remove it without releasing the latch.

If the SFP module cannot be removed, it is installed and seated properly.

    2. If the SFP module can be removed, reinsert it and press harder with your thumb. Repeat if necessary until it is latched securely into the socket.
  6. Clean the optical surfaces of the fiber cable.
CAUTION Use only approved methods for cleaning and preparing optical fibers and optical connectors.
  7. Remove the dust plug from the connector. Save the dust plug for future use.
  8. Insert the fiber cable to the fiber port connectors of the SFP module.

Make sure the SFP module release latch is in the up (closed) position when you insert the cable connector into the SFP module.

  9. Check that the data starts flowing.
