For the most reliable measurements:

  • The measurement site must be undisturbed ground, 1 m² (10.76 sq. ft), and typical of the surface of interest.
  • The ground surface must be level with respect to the immediate area within a 10‑meter (32‑foot 10‑inch) radius.
Correct positioning of the sensor and insulation of the sensor cable are essential for the measurements.
  1. Choose the installation place. Make sure that the sensor is located within cable length of the enclosure.
  2. Dig a hole that is slightly deeper than the desired installation depth of the sensor.
  3. To get good sensor contact with the soil, position the sensor horizontally into the hole and push the sensor into the wall of the hole to the desired depth until set firmly.
  4. Fill the hole with soil.
  5. For thermal insulation, do either of the following:
    • Wrap 1 … 2 m (3 ft 3 in … 6  ft 7 in) of the sensor cable into a coil and bury it in the ground.
    • Lead the sensor cable from the enclosure to the sensor through an insulated tube that you have buried in the ground.
  6. Lead the sensor cable through the flange at the bottom of the enclosure.
When using stainless steel flange, lead the cable through the M12 cable gland.
