Here are general guidelines for placing the system, devices, and sensors:

  • To ensure correct GPS readings, position the multiband antenna so that it has the clearest possible view of the sky and horizon in all directions. Avoid sources of electromagnetic interference such as radar equipment, VHF radio antennas, or electromagnetic interference from generator and engine components.
  • Allow sufficient clearance for all the sensors and the weather station enclosure.
  • Install the sensors and the weather station enclosure high enough to avoid spray from passing vehicles and snow plowed from the road.
  • Install the wind sensor away from buildings, trees, and other objects that could disturb wind flow.
  • Install temperature sensors away from heat sources that could disturb temperature measurements.
  • Always use the radiation shield with the humidity and temperature sensor, as it protects the sensor from direct sunlight. Make sure that the sensor is not mounted above the weather station enclosure.
  • Point all optical sensors away from reflective surfaces and powerful light sources, such as reflections from the rising or setting sun and the lights of passing vehicles.
  • Ensure that remote surface sensors and cameras have a clear view to the road.
  • Install precipitation sensors on an open area free of cables, tree branches, or any objects that may disturb precipitation detection.
CAUTION To ensure system operability, install the sensors close to the mast. This reduces the risk of low signal quality as well as operating and heating voltage loss.
