Cable ducting protects against vermin damage, eases reinstallation in case the sensor needs to be replaced, and directs water away from the duct. Follow these guidelines:

  • Use ducting for the cable from the weather station enclosure to the road or runway edge.
  • With hot filling material, use a duct of robust material, such as stainless steel, from the road or runway edge to the sensor. Plastic ducting may start cracking when the road or runway is resurfaced. The material must also be resistant to de-icing and other chemicals.
  • Use as narrow a duct as possible. The larger the slot, the greater the risk is for the slot filling material to start cracking.
  • Use at least 60 mm (2.36 in) slot filling material on the top of the duct.
  • Seal the ducting from the sensor end with tape. Leave the other side open so that water can drain from there.
  • To allow water to exit the duct, drill a hole to the lowest part of the duct.
