Table 1. Common problems with serial line connection
Problem Probable cause Remedy
You cannot establish a connection to the station. Cables are not connected. Check cable connections.
Serial line interface card is not inserted correctly in the expansion slot in the PC. Check that the card is inserted all the way into the expansion slot.
The QML data logger is not switched on. Switch on the QML data logger.

You cannot establish a connection to the station, and receive the error message:

Failed to open port. Port does not exist

The COM port selected in AWS Client for connecting to the QML data logger is incorrect. To check the selected COM port, select Settings > Address Book. Select the correct port.
You can establish a connection to the station but cannot open a service connection. Faulty serial line cable or poor cable connection. Make sure that the serial line cable is properly connected and that the cable is not faulty. If needed, replace the cable.
You can establish a connection to the station, but the service connection displays incorrect characters or you do not receive measurement values from the QML data logger. Incorrect serial line settings. To check the selected COM port and its settings, select Settings > Address Book.
Faulty serial line cable or poor cable connection. Make sure that the serial line cable is properly connected and that the cable is not faulty. If needed, replace the cable.
Table 2. Common problems with TCP/IP socket connection
Problem Remedy
You cannot establish a TCP/IP connection to the QML data logger. Make sure that the QML data logger is switched on.
Make sure that the QML data logger is connected to the network.
Make sure that the QML data logger is generally accessible; that is, it responds to the ping command from AWS Client.
If you attempt to connect to the the QML data logger by selecting a socket type Address Book entry, make sure that the socket parameters are correct for the entry.
Table 3. Common problems with dial-up connection
Problem Remedy
You cannot establish a dial-up connection to the QML data logger. Make sure that the modem cable is connected to the line jack on the modem and to the phone jack on the wall.
If you use a cellular modem, make sure that it has reception. To test the signal strength, issue the AT+CSQ command from the terminal. For a reliable connection, the response value must be 15 or higher.
If you have trouble calling the QML data logger from the terminal, try calling the QML data logger manually from HyperTerminal.
